Dr. Mays was one of over 30 academic researchers and leaders in AIDS research and treatment that signed on to a letter to the Department of Health and Human Services asking for an increase in HIV/AIDS and health research funding across federal agencies.
Dr. Mays was interviewed for this article on the high infant mortality rate among African American women in Los Angeles county.

Dr. Mays moderated a panel on intervention research at the meeting for members of Congress.
As part of APA’s 5th Annual Science Leadership Conference, more than 100 psychological scientists reached out to nearly 160 members of Congress from 31 states to educate them about the importance of sufficient funding in Fiscal Year 2011 for the National Institutes of Health. The committee’s findings were released in the March 2011 report “Leading Health Indicators for Healthy People 2020“, and recommend a series of new indicators to help improve the overall health of the nation, including the social and environmental determinants of health; mental health; substance abuse; and quality of care.
