BRITE Center Director Dr. Vickie Mays has been appointed by former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to fill the House of Representatives seat on the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics.

The committee serves as a public advisory body to Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius. Eighteen individuals serve on the committee at a time, and they are selected from a pool of nominees distinguished in health sciences, health care and public health fields. While 16 members are selected by Sebelius, two are chosen by Congress. Dr. Mays is part of the latter group. The committee serves as a national forum on health data and information systems to enable the evolution of public and private health information systems toward more uniform, shared data standards, operating within a framework that protects privacy and security. Center director Dr. Vickie Mays was presented a Presidential Citation at the American Psychological Association’s Science Meeting on May 16 for her contributions to psychological science and public policy.

Dr. Jennifer F. Kelly, president of the association, praised Mays’ research and policy development in the area of health disparities that impact communities of color, particularly the contextual factors that surround HIV/AIDS and COVID-19. Mays has made vital contributions to mental health research and reporting.

“As a psychologist committed to breaking down social and political barriers, Dr. Mays’ tenacity and perseverance have fueled and guided her path to eradicate inequities that lead to the marginalization of communities of color,” Kelly said.
